What, when and who?
The population benefiting from the project, and the project implementation teams in the field in our intervention areas.
Background and goals
This project is designed to respond to the food insecurity problem faced by the population of the territory of RUTSHURU, in the province of North Kivu in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, it will be carried out in the chiefdom of BWISHA, integrating all social strata. Since 1990, the territory of RUTSHURU has been shaken by several conflicts including political conflicts, interethnic conflicts, armed conflicts. And in 1994, Rwandan refugees also flooded in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These refugees were fleeing the war which ended in the genocide of Tutsi in their country, Rwanda. What was more serious for the Congolese people of the DRC is that among the refugees who arrived are armed people. The socio-political situation then became dramatic from the AFDL war of 1996. This war was followed by that of the RCD, that of the CNDP, that of the M23. This forced the population to live in wandering, moving from village to village in search of safety. Consequently, the inhabitants of the villages of RUTSHURU no longer had the occyde to work their fields in order to meet the food needs. 'is added the epidemic of the EBOLA virus disease from 2018, and today here is the COVID-19 pandemic. All this has serious negative consequences on the socioeconomic level of the inhabitants of the territory of RUTSHURU and of the province of North Kivu in general. What to do in the face of such a situation? How can we help this rural population of the territory of RUTSHURU to be able to get out of this situation of food insecurity?
Currently, as the security situation is relatively calm, the PALPER asbl-RDC association take advantage of this lull to set up the Food Security Support project for 1,500 households victims of armed conflicts in the territory of RUTSHURU, North Kivu in the DRC, in order to support them in s improvement of their socioeconomic conditions. To achieve this, we are going to set up a system of grouping farmers together in the pilot fields, with revolving breeding of farm animals, training farmers on new agricultural techniques to promote increased production in their own fields, include the behavior change component through awareness raising on the fight against malnutrition, food balance within their households to COVID-19 which is rampant in our communities, it is also an opportunity to make them aware of the respect of various barrier measures to limit the spread of the disease.
