Who, what and when

Organic Farm Knowledge was set up by the EU-funded project Organic Knowledge Network Arable (OK-Net Arable, duration: 2016-2019, funded by Horizon 2020, the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation), which aimed to improve the productivity and quality of organic farming. Subsequently, the online platform was extended with knowledge acquired through the follow-up project OK-Net EcoFeed (2018-2020, also funded by Horizon 2020), which supports organic pig and poultry farmers to achieve the goal of 100% organic and regional feed use.
Through cooperation with different projects, the scope of the platform is constantly being expanded and made available to users.
The main partners of the Organic Farm Knowledge Platform are the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL, ICROFS and IFOAM Organics Europe.

Background and goals

Farmers are increasingly looking for more sustainable farming practices such as organic farming. The European Commission recognises the potential of organic farming and has set forth the target of achieving at least 25% organic farmland in the EU by 2030 in its Farm to Fork strategy as part of the European Green Deal. To leverage research to achieve this target, the new EU Organic Action Plan pledges to allocate at least 30% of the budget for research and innovation (R&I) in agriculture, forestry, and rural areas to topics specific to or relevant for the organic sector. This is crucial since organic farming systems rely on knowledge rather than external inputs.

Practical tools & knowledge exchange to enhance organic farming

Organic Farm Knowledge is on its way to becoming the European reference hub for practical knowledge on organic farming. Providing access to a wide range of organic farming tools and resources, the platform also aims to serve as a virtual meeting place for cross-border learning and promote knowledge exchange between farmers, farm advisors and scientists to increase the productivity and quality of organic farming across Europe. By bringing together all practice-based materials such as factsheets, guides, calculation tools, and videos in one place, the platform helps both organic and conventional farmers to improve their practices and provides an ideal solution to find relevant information quickly. By allowing users to comment, discuss and interact on social media, Organic Farm Knowledge helps farmers and advisors become more innovative. Organic Farm Knowledge clearly fills a need among organic farmers and extension workers, evidenced by the ever-growing number of visitors.
Organic Farm Knowledge is open to Horizon Europe and other projects that wish to integrate their results into the platform.

YouTube Channel

A diverse collection of video content from the Organic Farm Knowledge Platform is now available on its own YouTube channel, accessible to everyone. A big advantage of the YouTube channel is that it is divided into different topics, making it easier for practitioners to find specific content. Videos are available on crop production, soil, animal husbandry, farm management, food chain management and environment and society. The channel offers a good educational opportunity to acquire knowledge on specific topics and have them explained visually.
