Who, what and when
The KlimaTeller was launched in 2011 by committed students of the University of Hamburg. Since 2018, the project has been jointly launched by NAHhaft e.V. and Greentable e.V.. The idea is: Making climate protection tasty - for climate-friendly chefs and their customers. The range of support is changing: as of 2019, there will be the KlimaTeller App, a calculator that measures the CO2 emissions of food, and a toolkit to inspire customers.
Background and goals
Our food system is one of the three largest emitters of greenhouse gas emissions in Germany - with a share of about 21% (21‐37% worldwide). Eating outside the home plays an important role in our diet: around 11.7 billion meals are consumed outside the home every year. With this project, we want to show restaurants and caterers the connection between the food they offer and climate protection and ensure that KlimaTeller are offered nationwide. This will give customers the opportunity to order a KlimaTeller everywhere - on the road, in a restaurant or at work.
With the KlimaTeller app, restaurants can easily calculate the CO2 emissions of their dishes and create new KlimaTeller in a playful way. On a KlimaTeller there are only ingredients that have not caused more than half of the emissions of an average dish. You can recognize a KlimaTeller by the label on the menu. Every guest will know that he or she saves at least 800g of CO2 equivalents with his or her choice of food.
Since 2019 customers have the opportunity to use the KlimaTeller app. The customers can recognize participating restaurants by the label at the entrance. This way, restaurants and customers can make a joint contribution to climate protection.
The calculation of CO2 emissions is based on a scientifically sound database from our cooperation partner Eaternity AG. It is currently the most comprehensive of its kind worldwide.
Exchange and support
We are happy to hear from interested restaurants and other providers. Local government and regional management can also promote the KlimaTeller in their community and region and thus tackle nutrition-related climate protection. Guests can ask for Climate Plates in their favourite restaurant or canteen and support the project in this way.
