In an initiative towards fostering sustainable food habits, a comprehensive report titled "Policy Strategies and Instruments for the Promotion of a Plant-Based Diet in Europe" has been released by the PlantEurope network.

This report delves into innovative policy approaches aimed at encouraging the adoption of plant-based diets across the continent.

With mounting concerns over environmental sustainability and public health, the need for transformative action in the food system has never been more urgent. Following 10 key recommendations for the promotion of plant-based diets and practical examples for policy makers, the report highlights current developments and political strategies to achieve this goal. It further introduces various policy instruments for the promotion of  a plant-based diet, including examples of data collection and monitoring, decision support, decision steering, and decision restriction, with examples which are already being implemented in European countries.

This release comes amidst growing momentum for plant-based diets as a means to mitigate climate change, reduce the burden of chronic diseases, and safeguard biodiversity. As governments and institutions grapple with the imperative to transition towards more sustainable food systems, this report serves as a timely resource for informed decision-making. By implementing the strategies and instruments outlined in this report, European policymakers can play a pivotal role in promoting more sustainable and healthful dietary patterns.
